Under the yellow sky of Limonetto

Limonetto, the new Sicilian restaurant located in the historic centre of San José del Cabo, opened its doors on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Everything felt perfectly in tune that evening: the music, the delightful aromas, the warm smiles, and even the moon, which rose a vibrant yellow, reminiscent of Sicilian lemon, over the estuary., everything seemed to be in perfect sync: the music, the smells, the smiles, and even the moon, which rose yellow-like a Sicilian lemon over the estuary.

The evening began with a warm welcome as guests filled the room with lively conversation, accompanied by the inviting aroma of Palo Santo. The décor celebrated the essence of Sicily, with vibrant yellow lemons brightening every corner and highlighting the significance of this fruit in Sicilian culture and economy.

In the courtyard, beneath the majestic shade of a parota tree, the warmth of the place was palpable. At the centre of attention stood a clay oven adorned with mosaics that evoked Mediterranean landscapes. There, Neapolitan chef Giorgio Sarracino, with a smile that reflected his passion, showcased a parade of delicacies: fluffy pizzas, pasta with traditional sauces, and delightful surprises from Sicilian cuisine that amazed me with every bite. “Everything here is homemade: the bread, the pasta. We even follow recipes that are not commonly seen in Mexico because we want to preserve the essence of our land,” said Donatella Fabio, the founding partner.

Donatella also shared the story of the dream that brought Limonetto to life. “It has always been a dream of my dad’s, but I had always put it off for another time. The pandemic brought me to Los Cabos; I came here to start a project. And suddenly I said, why not? We started with the idea of a little place, which suddenly turned into a beautiful place. Her father, Leo Fabio, who came to Mexico from Sicily in 1978, could not hide his excitement. “Limonetto is that Sicilian corner I had always dreamed of. I’m happy,” he said, his eyes full of pride.

To complement the dishes, Baja Wines served wines and drinks that perfectly matched the fresh and intense flavours of Southern Italy. Meanwhile, local band Baja Lemon set the mood with a calm and chill musical selection that perfectly matched the energy of the evening.

The importance of lemon trees extends far beyond decoration. In Sicily, these trees are not just an agricultural resource; they are integral to the region’s landscape, economy, and cultural identity. Lemons are vital in Sicilian cuisine, symbolizing freshness, tradition, and community. This sense of belonging has been palpable in Limonetto, where it feels as though everyone is part of one large family.

As we said goodbye, the moon was still there, round and bright, while the party continued on the corner of Centenario and Morelos. In that corner of Los Cabos, the dream of a father and daughter had taken shape in a space that celebrates food, culture, and roots. In the end, as they say in Sicily, life is sweeter when it is shared with love.
