Serial Fishing Loreto Cup: Tournaments of Tradition, Innovation and Growth

Sport fishing is a long-standing tradition in Loreto and a cornerstone of the local economy and culture. Tourists and locals alike are drawn to the sustainable practices that benefit the community. Francisco Martinez Davis, a former passionate fisherman, now coordinates the tournaments, infusing his role with a fresh perspective while maintaining his deep connection to fishing. Today, he not only enjoys it from a different angle, but also coordinates the tournaments with the same energy and enthusiasm he once had casting his hook into the water. This change of direction, from competitor to organizer, reflects his love of the sea and his desire to promote Loreto, ensuring that each tournament is even more exciting.

Francisco hails from Loreto, where a strong family fishing tradition runs deep. He and his brothers run the Nemenchas Sport Fish and Tours agency, which has five boats for trips. In a direct conversation, he emphasizes the new requirement for a sea logbook for captains during this year’s tournaments. This booklet functions similarly to a driver’s license and serves as the captain’s official identification. The tournament’s logistics pose challenges, particularly regarding permits and promotion, but Francisco, a young Loreto native, is undeterred. He relishes the opportunity to contribute to the growth of these events. “The most complicated thing has been the logistics of the tournament; the paperwork is a bit tedious.”

The Inaugural Foundation Tournament, held in October 2024, marked the start of a new era of competitions that will run until the cup closes in August 2025. This event unites local fishermen and attracts tourists, solidifying Loreto’s reputation as a premier sport fishing destination.

The long-awaited Turkey Tournament took place in December 2024, with 39 teams participating. In May2025, the Pink Promise Torneo Pesca Femenil Loreto will take place, and Francisco assures us that it boasts a distinctive energy and approach. The Father’s Day Tournament, set to take place for the first time in June 2025, is poised to be a family-friendly event. This cup will bring together anglers from all over Baja California Sur, offering an unparalleled experience with a special raffle for participants.

La Misión es El Dorado will mark the closing of the cup in August 2025, the best month for Dorado fishing. The event will cap off a season of camaraderie, as each tournament fosters fun-filled fellowship among participants.

Sponsorship and Local Support

Fishing tournaments in Loreto are more than just a celebration of fishing tradition; they are a vital source of economic revenue. They attract national and international tourists, especially from the United States, which benefits multiple sectors such as hotels, gastronomy and boat rentals.

Participate in this unique experience. Winning isn’t guaranteed, but participating, enjoying the atmosphere, and being in the registry will give you new experiences. The tournaments represent a lot of things, and they’re definitely the most attractive aspect of them. Participating is an opportunity to compete and be part of the festive atmosphere, meet new people, and experience the excitement of an event that has become a benchmark for Loreto.

The tranquillity of dawn, with the fishermen getting ready in their boats and the sky lighting up with the sunrise, announces the start of each tournament. Loreto reaffirms itself as a fishing destination where tradition, innovation and community meet in every hook cast.
