Avanzamos rápidamente hasta 2017, cuando se inició el primer campo de golf de Solmar. Desde el principio, Norman sintió que tenía una oportunidad única para crear un espectacular diseño por las características del espacio ubicado en la costa con dunas y esculpido en una zona rocosa del desierto.
Los diseños de Norman son identificados por utilizar la menor invasión al entorno natural. Con esta idea, se diseñó un campo que atraviesa el rancho y aprovecha al máximo las características naturales y los múltiples ecosistemas.
Algunos hoyos se diseñaron en lo alto de la colina donde llega el sonido del golpeteo de las olas. En un terreno más alto los canalizó por zonas inclinadas y por arroyos sinuosos. El desierto aquí está lleno de majestuosos cardones y vegetación nativa de Baja California. Gracias al mínimo movimiento de tierra, el campo de golf parece que surgió del paisaje, no que fue construido sobre él. Lo mejor de todo, cada hoyo en Rancho San Lucas ofrece una vista insuperable hacia el mar.
Fast forward to 2017, when ground was broken on Solmar Group’s first golf course. From the beginning, Norman felt he had a unique opportunity to create something special: a spectacular links-style layout nestled in massive dunes and carved into desert foothills.
Known for employing a ‘least-disturbance’ approach in his designs, Norman built a course that tiptoes across the land and takes full advantage of the site’s natural features and multiple ecosystems. A handful of holes are sculpted into huge sand hills within earshot of the thudding surf. Above them on higher ground, fairways trace sloping terrain creased by winding arroyos. The desert here is thick with stately cardon cacti and native Baja vegetation. Because earthmoving was kept to a minimum, the golf course looks like it was extruded by the landscape, not built on top of it. Best of all, each hole at Rancho San Lucas serves up a stirring view of the sea.
Es un diseño bien equilibrado, divertido. Los hoyos frente al mar han recibido excelentes críticas. El tercer hoyo es un hermoso par 3 que flanquea la playa a favor del viento hacia un green custodiado por un par de bunkers.
Los golfistas descubrirán este invierno, el green es además un magnífico punto desde el cual se pueden observar las ballenas en la costa.
While there are no dull moments on this well-balanced layout, the oceanfront holes are already getting rave reviews. For example, the third hole is a beautiful par 3 that flanks the beach and plays downwind to an undulating green defended by a pair of sharp-edged, steep-walled bunkers constructed from recycled artificial turf.
As golfers will discover this winter, the green is a good vantage point from which to view breaching whales offshore.
