The lake is created by the waters of the San Bernardo stream that flows down the slopes of a hill and appears in various gentle waterfalls. The stream constantly renews the water in the lake and the waterfalls constantly delight those who make the trip.

The beautiful landscape is surrounded by various species of trees that become a forest of black oak, pinion pine, flowering arbutus, and sotol palm. Mule deer, cougars, bobcats, raccoons, eagles and hawks inhabit the area requiring visitors to keep a prudent distance.
