The semifinals of the eighth edition of the ATP 250 left fans with their mouths wide open: Casper Ruud (No.12) and Jordan Thompson (No.40) managed to advance to the final match.
The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo will hold an unprecedented final in Los Cabos, the first semifinal, with a 1-1 head-to-head record, between Ruud and Tsitsipas. After one hour and 49 minutes of duel, the match ended 6-4, 7-6(4) in favor of the Norwegian. In the end, the encounter was epic.
Accompanied by applause and words of encouragement, Ruud managed to convert 88% of points with his first serve and saved all five breaks he had in the match. In the first set he took a 5-3 lead in 39 minutes. Para el segundo set, el campeón 2023, Tsitsipas, entró en ritmo, pero la diferencia fue mínima en el Tie-Break. The Greeks had, on the one hand, twelve aces, but also one double fault and six unforced errors.
The second semi-final was unforgettable, a complete surprise for those present. Jordan Thompson played a great match for the second consecutive match and was confident against the tournament’s top seed, Sacha Zverev. The eighth seed had already staged the best comeback of the week against Michelsen in the quarterfinals. However, what he presented in his duel against the big favourite was a performance that surprised the local and international fans and the sports press.
The match lasted three hours and forty minutes, with five aces for each side. Only one double fault was recorded for Zverev, with 61% and 62% of points won on the first serve for Sacha and Jordan, respectively.
In doubles, Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi were eliminated in the semifinals, with 6-2, 6-3 results against Gonzalo Escobar from Ecuador and Aleksandr Nedovyesov from Kazakhstan, who will now play in the final.
The second doubles semifinal will feature Norway’s Casper Ruud and William Blumberg of the United States against Australia’s Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, following the singles final, featuring Ruud and Thompson.
This decision was made by the ATP, together with the tournament organizers and the players, because Ruud and Thompson advanced to the singles final and were still alive in the doubles. The finals will be like a movie! Don’t miss the live broadcast on ESPN.
