What an exciting close to the World Wide Technology Championship 2024! American Austin Eckroat took first place, his second PGA TOUR title and his second win of the season.
In the final round, Eckroat was unstoppable, making 11 birdies for an impressive 9-under par, finishing the week at 24-under overall. With that score, he beat fellow countrymen Justin Lower and Carson Young, who also shined in the tournament, by one stroke.
Lower and Young, who had shared the lead with Colombia’s Nico Echavarría after the first three days, finished tied for second with a 23-under-par total. Echavarría, meanwhile, fought until the end and closed in sixth place with a total of -17. Although he had some ups and downs in the final round, he managed to close with birdies on the last holes and was satisfied with his performance.
Eckroat was thrilled and commented: “This was probably the best golf I have ever played. The putts were going in from the start. It was automatic out there, although I can’t believe I won by just one stroke after going 9-under. Definitely a day to remember!
Nico Echavarría also celebrated his sixth place, noting that if he had been offered that position at the beginning of the week, he would have signed it without hesitation.
With his third top 10 of the season, Echavarría moved from 65th to 61st in FedExCup Fall. He is now close to his goal of a top-60 finish, giving him a berth in the first two significant tournaments in 2025. “I have to keep fighting in the tournaments, which is enough to reach my goal,” said Echavarría.
The next stop for him and the other competitors will be the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, which will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda. Fellow Bermudian Camilo Villegas is the defending champion.
“I’ve been doing well. I’m hitting my drive hard, and in Bermuda, it’s key to keep the ball in the fairway with so much wind and such a tight tee. I like that course; I’ve already had good results there. The truth is, I’m hitting everything well so that I wouldn’t change anything,” said Echavarría.
The FedExCup Fall is almost over, and there are only two tournaments left, this one in Bermuda and the RSM Classic in Georgia. That’s where the top 125 who will keep their card for the 2025 PGA TOUR season will be determined – every stroke counts!
