On Wednesday, 22 January 2025, at the Club Campestre San José del Cabo, Fabián Cervantes Gil was sworn in as President of the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives (IMEF) Baja California Sur for the 2025 term.
In an event that marked the beginning of this new phase, the commitment of the local board of directors, who will play a key role in the achievements of the coming year, was also acknowledged.
The ceremony was attended by Gabriela Gutiérrez Mora, the National President of IMEF, who reaffirmed the institution’s support and unity at the national level. She is also the representative of the South Californian entity. In Baja California Sur, IMEF has over 40 active members. As part of the event, a press conference was held to emphasize IMEF’s role as a key player in analyzing the financial and business environment in the region and across the country. This appointment symbolizes IMEF’s commitment to promoting economic development and innovation in Baja California Sur.
During the event, it was emphasized that this year’s main objective is to promote financial education, particularly for young people. It was stressed that, over time, financial education has transitioned from being viewed as a luxury to a fundamental necessity. As a result, it is increasingly recognized as an essential subject in schools.
In her speech, Tamara Montalvo, the Director of ITES Los Cabos, highlighted the achievements obtained after two consecutive years of collaboration with IMEF.
“We have observed a significant development among university students. They are engaging in activities that enable them to demonstrate soft skills, which, unfortunately, higher education institutions are not fully equipped to teach, as the focus is primarily on scientific training. Working alongside professionals and experts in various fields instils such confidence in these students that they can now lead and organize activities independently,” said Montalvo.
Financial education: key to breaking cycles of poverty and economic exclusion
“According to World Bank data, only 33% of adults have basic financial literacy. This lack of knowledge limits individual progress and perpetuates cycles of poverty and economic exclusion. The solution starts with life skills education. Teaching young people how credit works and the importance of debt is as important as any other subject,” said Fabián Cervantes Gil.
During her speech, Gabriela Gutiérrez Mora stressed that the state is increasingly involved in the country’s economic and financial life. She also announced that this year, Baja California Sur will host an important international convention in November, with the participation of more than 22 guest countries.
