International tourism in Baja California Sur is about to take a key turn. At a press conference held on Tuesday July 29, 2025, at Nicksan Palmilla, the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (Fiturca) and Copa Airlines officially announced news that will mark a before and after in the destination’s air connectivity: the opening of a new direct route between Panama and Los Cabos, becoming the first direct air connection from Latin America to the Southern Californian destination.
The route will begin operating on December 4, 2025 and will have three weekly frequencies: Monday, Thursday and Saturday. With this new connection, Los Cabos is integrated into the Hub of the Americas, Copa Airlines’ hub at Tocumen International Airport, providing a direct gateway from more than 60 cities in 32 countries across the continent, including key markets such as Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

“It is a very convenient gateway for Latin American markets. Los Cabos will have direct access to passengers coming from the south of the continent,” said Mauro Arredondo, General Manager of Copa Airlines in Mexico.
It is estimated that this new route will bring more than 25,000 Latin American tourists each year, which would translate into an economic spillover of more than 25 million dollars per year for the region, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transport, tour operators and the entire value chain of the sector.
The completion of this critical negotiation was possible thanks to the joint work between the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, Copa Airlines and the Los Cabos Hotel Association, who joined strategic efforts to consolidate this new connection and diversify the outbound markets to the destination.

“The opening of this route reaffirms Copa Airlines’ commitment to the Mexican market and diversifies tourism to Los Cabos,” added Arredondo.
This achievement is part of Fiturca’s strategy to continue positioning Los Cabos as a global destination, now with its eyes set on the south of the continent. During the first few months, Copa Airlines will evaluate the performance of the route and may increase frequencies if demand warrants it.
With this new connection, Los Cabos not only expands its air network but also opens a new cultural and tourist window to Latin America. From December, the Mexican Pacific will be closer than ever to the south of the continent.
