La Toba makes a big splash!

In Ciudad Insurgentes, a film festival is making a significant impact on the cultural scene. The La Toba International Film Festival not only showcases films but also of fers opportunities for the community. Launched by actor Enoc Leaño, a proud native of La Toba, the festival has evolved into a community movement that combines art and education in meaningful ways.

“We just needed a leader, and that leader was Enoc Leaño. He came in, ignited the spark, and people responded,” says Ramona Bernal, a teacher at CBTA 27 and one of the enthusiastic coordinators of the festival. And indeed, they responded. In its second edition, more than 60 students participated in logistics, coverage, and even camera operation.

What began as a humble journey with screenings at the charming esplanade of the old Cine Estrella has now blossomed into an incredible celebration of cinema across neighbourhoods and communities! With initiatives like Barrio Cinema and La Pantalla Viajera, places like San Juanico, Santo Domingo, and María Auxiliadora have transformed into vibrant open-air cinemas where children, young people, and adults come together to experience the magic of film like never before.

And that’s not all! Throughout the year, enthusiastic workshops on writing, dubbing, scriptwriting, and editing are sparking creativity across the board. ‘Week after week, our screenwriters— young and old, teachers and aspiring artists—are connecting, sharing ideas, and honing their craft. They aren’t just workshop participants; they are truly becoming screenwriters!’ Ramona enthusiastically shares, radiating excitement.

The festival’s history is filled with remarkable moments—like the laying of the first stone of the UABCS building in Ciudad Insurgentes, which happened just a morning before the very first edition of the festival. ‘It was a magical coincidence,’ Ramona recalls, ‘because that same year, our campus became a reality!’

Mark your calendars! From September 30 to October 4, La Toba will unfold its third edition, boasting a state-wide call for entries, dynamic creative catwalks, engaging workshops, enlightening conferences, and so many surprises in store! ‘Our community was absolutely thirsty for art. The festival came to discover us not just as professionals but as human beings,’ Ramona concludes passionately. Because yes—art is here to thrive, connect, and inspire! Get ready to be part of this fabulous celebration!
