ASUPMATOMA Celebrated 30 Years of Environmental Conservation in Los Cabos

In the framework of its 30th anniversary, the civil association ASUPMATOMA A.C. was recognized by authorities, environmentalists, and representatives from the tourism sector during a press conference held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Hotel Solmar. The organization, a pioneer in sea turtle conservation in the municipality, shared its achievements over three decades of community and environmental work.

The event was attended by Karina de la O Uribe, the delegate of Cabo San Lucas, who expressed her appreciation for the work of ASUPMATOMA and announced a commitment to build dry-fibreglass toilets in the turtle camps before the end of the year. This effort aims to improve sanitary conditions in areas where sea turtle protection and monitoring are carried out.

Carlos Tinoco, Vice President of the association, recalled the beginnings of the project promoted by environmentalist René Pinal and stressed that the purpose of ASUPMATOMA has gone beyond activism. “The objective is not only to train environmentalists, but more conscious people,” he said, emphasizing the educational and community impact of the organization.

During the conference, Gabriel Olvera Guevara, head of the Municipal Sea Turtle Protection Programme, emphasised the active collaboration between the XV Municipality of Los Cabos and civil associations, such as ASUPMATOMA, in the conservation of endangered species.

As part of the commemoration, an agenda of activities to be carried out over the next month was presented. In June, a documentary film and a roundtable discussion were scheduled at the Cerrito del Timbre. In July, the nesting season was launched in “El Suspiro”, accompanied by a beach cleanup and awareness-raising activities. In August, a series of workshops on wildlife photography was announced, also at the turtle camp.

These actions reaffirmed ASUPMATOMA’s commitment to environmental education and community work, demonstrating that conservation is a collective effort that flourishes with local participation.
