Celebrating International Jazz Day

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Café Ufficio in El Merkado, a press conference was held for the International Jazz Day celebrations at Jazz On The Rocks, El Merkado Koral Center, La Paz and Todos Santos.

Several notable individuals were in attendance at the event, such as Víctor Hugo Caballero Gutiérrez, the General Director of the South Californian Institute of Culture. Rodrigo Esponda, the General Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA), was also present and will be promoting the celebration. Councilman Roberto Jiménez from Movimiento Ciudadano, Mariela Tapiz from Koral Center, and Jorge “Tito” Rodríguez, composer, arranger, Jazz promoter, and Artistic Director of International Jazz Day, were also among the attendees.

“When we started talking with Tito Rodriguez, we said we must support. I was on the Tourism Commission, and all this helps to stimulate the economy, and as long as it is for the benefit of Los Cabos, we must support from wherever we are,” said Rodrigo Esponda.

Regarding International Jazz Day:

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in bringing people together in all corners of the world. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and President of the Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute. The Institute is the non-profit organization in charge of planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.

“I always look for diversity in genre. We try to give people a program on different jazz genres; it is excellent and worthwhile. The concerts are one hour long, with a 15-minute break for the next one to come up and settle in,” said Tito Rodríguez.

At the press conference, three concerts were announced prior to the date at Jazz On The Rocks:
