The Los Cabos International Film Festival and Hotel El Ganzo presented the premiere of Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie in a magical evening.

The Los Cabos International Film Festival: Encuentros de Cine presented a special screening of the film Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie (2022) on Friday, 6 December 2024, in collaboration with the Hotel El Ganzo, as part of its Movie Nights programme. The screening, which took place at the iconic Jetty in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina, offered a unique cinematic experience in a breathtaking setting, under the stars and surrounded by the majesty of the region’s natural landscape.

The evening celebrated film culture with the Latin American premiere of Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie, directed by acclaimed Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov. The film chronicles the life of the provocative Russian poet and novelist Edouard Limonov.

Based on the novel of the same name by Emmanuel Carrère, the film offers a fragmented and audacious portrait of the writer and politician Eduard Limonov. It blends biographical aspects with a distinctive visual style, highlighting the protagonist’s transformation through adversity, from poverty in New York to his controversial political leadership in Russia.

Ben Whishaw’s performance is a high point, bringing depth to a complex and, at times, unpleasant character. Despite efforts to humanise him, Limonov comes across as an antihero who is difficult to empathise with. The film explores themes of identity, power, and nihilism, all wrapped up in an aesthetic marked by cultural references and an evocative soundtrack, including pieces such as Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.”

With this collaboration, the Los Cabos International Film Festival and Hotel El Ganzo seek to consolidate their commitment to promoting avant-garde cinema in a context that fuses the destination’s natural beauty with art, film and music.

Movie Nights: Open-air cinema in San José del Cabo

During the last half-year, Hotel El Ganzo has been running the Movie Nights programme with Cinema Vagabundo, a film club originally from Cabo San Lucas that has been showing free outdoor films for 13 years.

The Movie Nights are also a revival of one of the Hotel’s first artistic projects, “El Ganzo Film Club,” which existed between January 2013 and July 2014. During that time, El Ganzo Film Club offered popular and cult cinema screenings every Tuesday, becoming a reference point for local cinephiles and tourists alike.

Located in Puerto Los Cabos, Hotel El Ganzo is known for its innovative approach to art, music and culture. With a space dedicated to creativity and entertainment, the hotel has established itself as a meeting place for those seeking unique cultural experiences.
