About the Book

“Zafra Poética Medio Siglo de Poesía y Tradición” (Poetic Zafra: Half a Century of Poetry and Tradition) is a comprehensive work that profoundly reflects the poetic landscape of Baja California Sur over 50 years. It highlights the genre’s evolution and richness within a specific cultural and social context.

The hardcover edition of Refined Taste, specially designed and laid out by Tendencia, has 206 pages, including the winning poems from the Margarito Sández Villarino Floral Games. The publication also features texts by contributors such as Eligio Moisés Coronado, Rosa María Mendoza Salgado, Raúl Carrillo Arciniega, and Gabriel Fonseca Verdugo. Attached are photos and maps that serve as invaluable documents for our culture. The pages also contain a gallery of “Gracious Majesties,” showcasing images of the queens of the Juegos Florales who have won the iconic contest.

Gabriel Fonseca Verdugo, the Municipal Chronicler of Los Cabos, wrote: “The Municipal Chronicle of Los Cabos, faithful to its institutional purpose, has carried out this publication to preserve and celebrate our cultural heritage. It fulfills its mission to safeguard the memory and identity of our region.”

José Antonio Sequera Meza, who holds a PhD in Philological Sciences from the University of Havana, Cuba, has compiled the verses of the winning poets from 1973 to 2024 of the Juegos Florales. The book also includes his literary analysis, which provides context for different periods, making it a valuable resource for understanding the poetic and social heritage.

Fonseca Verdugo writes, ‘Zafra Poética aims to guide future generations, navigating the rich cultural history of San José del Cabo. This book acts as a bridge between generations, facilitating a dialogue between the past and the future. Each page represents a step towards preserving and revitalizing our heritage.’

The fictional interview “Una charla temporal con Margarito Sández Villarino” (“A Chat Through Time with Margarito Sández Villarino”), written by Rosa María Mendoza Salgado, is a must-read. It offers valuable insight into the poet’s life from San José del Cabo and helps us understand the lasting impact of his literary legacy.

Zafra Poética is more than just a collection of poems. It is an invitation to pause, take a breath, and reconnect with the things that truly matter. In a literary world where fleeting trends often prevail, this work provides a sanctuary and a chance to delve into the beauty of the place we call home, as portrayed through the verses dedicated to Baja California Sur. This collection empowers poetry through its unique beauty, from the front and back covers to the last page.
