Cristina Rodríguez
Cristina Rodríguez fondly remembers how agricultural development began in Baja California Sur, driven by the vision of General Agustín Olachea. Her family has always taken pride in this legacy.
It all started when the general invited her father to visit the territory and evaluate the installation of an aviation system that would facilitate the export of agricultural products. At that moment, her father became captivated by the region, its potential, and the idea of transforming this still largely unexplored area into a productive centre.

Cristina says that her father, Abelardo Rodríguez, son of the President of the Republic, initially doubted General Olachea’s proposal. However, it wasn’t long before he fell in love with the project and the place. Soon, they began to lay out the first runways and organize flights to transport fresh produce to California. Recalling those days, Cristina remembers with a smile: “Nothing doesn’t grow here. The problem is how to stop it,” her father used to say, marvelling at the fertility of the valley. The initiative not only boosted agriculture but also laid the foundations for the state’s economy, thanks to tax incentives and the support of visionary leaders.
Olachea’s influence extended beyond agriculture. His advocacy for education and the establishment of rural boarding schools is among his significant legacies, providing opportunities for young people in remote areas. Cristina highlights the importance of this vision, stating, “My grandfather never progressed beyond fourth grade, but for him, education was the most valuable thing a government could offer its citizens.” This educational philosophy was aligned with his economic perspective, which promoted the colonization and development of the Santo Domingo Valley and other previously underserved regions.
Cristina emphasizes how Olachea’s vision transformed the hotel industry and tourism infrastructure by anticipating future needs. “He was an incredible visionary who loved his land and turned a desert into a highly productive area,” she says with admiration. Thanks to his leadership and the dedication of those who worked alongside him, regions such as the Santo Domingo Valley were developed into high-yield agricultural centres. Products like asparagus have become a source of local pride and serve as an example of how the vision of a few can significantly change a territory.
Agustín Olachea’s story lives on in families, fields, and education, inspiring us to recognize that the fusion of vision, passion, and action can create an indelible legacy for future generations.
