Between San José del Cabo and La Playa, there was a cluster of large trees called nacapules. They were arranged on one side of the road, over a very narrow crack in the dirt road. Locals always said that the nacapsules were frightening because, at night, motorists passing by were frightened by the ghostly figures that contrasted with the branches and the dim light that sometimes reflected the moon
As I gazed into the distance, I noticed a large circle resembling a tunnel. What intrigued me the most was the uncertainty of what lay on the other side. As I walked along the path, the roots hanging from the branches appeared in motion, creating an optical illusion that they could reach down to trap you.
The nacapules stand as unique and majestic sentinels in the desert, with their twisted trunks and tangled branches that extend to the ground. They are guardians of life, providing essential habitats for many species in the arid regions of Baja California Sur.
According to legend, these trees are considered mystical. Locals have reported that while passing by something could suddenly appear hanging between the branches, seemingly trapped by the vines. But when they looked back, it was just a sack. From a distance, it could give the deceptive impression of being a hanged person.
Others say that a spectral woman dressed in white roams the area. She met a tragic end at the hands of man who abducted her on her wedding day and brought her to the nacapules, where he ended her life. It is believed that her ghost wanders in an endless quest to haunt and torment her killer.
