This year marks the 44th edition of Bisbee’s, the series of sport fishing tournaments held annually at the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The Offshore and Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournaments will be held October 15-29, 2024.
The growth of the fishing port is closely linked to the success and expansion of one of the world’s most famous and prestigious fishing events. This event is known mainly for its millionaire prizes and the participation of international fishing teams.
During tournaments, the Marina comes alive with hundreds of boats needing service, fuel, and maintenance, generating revenue for local businesses. It also benefits restaurants, hotels, stores, and other companies in the area.
The event began in 1981 when Bob Bisbee, a businessman and avid fisherman, organized a modest fishing competition with just six teams. However, it quickly gained popularity due to the excellent marlin fishing in the waters of Baja California Sur. Over time, the Bisbee became an internationally renowned event, attracting teams worldwide and offering million-dollar prizes.
The tournament, especially the Black & Blue, has been a key player in the development of the fishing port. Over the years, it has drawn a steady stream of tourists, fishermen, and financial resources. Its role in marking the start of the fishing season is particularly exciting, as Clicerio Mercado Hernandez, director of Bisbee’s Mexico, points out: “The start of the sport fishing season also signals the beginning of the peak season in Cabo San Lucas and beyond. We all look forward to this time, as it brings a surge in tourism and the arrival of people with their boats for the season.”
With the increasing popularity of fishing tournaments like Bisbee’s, the Cabo San Lucas Marina has had to update and expand its facilities to accommodate the growing demand for nautical services. The tournament draws luxury fishing boats from all corners of the globe, creating a need for larger and more modern docks, expanded mooring capacity, and a comprehensive range of services, including fuel stations, maintenance, and equipment storage. These efforts reflect the marina’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its clientele.
