The temazcal, seen as a maternal womb, is a traditional Mexican steam bath. The four cardinal directions, and by opening and closing the temazcal; the release the old energy (the steam generated can escape) and the new energy can enter. It promotes physical well-being and healing. It is also a ritual and spiritual practice in which traditional healing methods are used to stimulate reflection and introspection. Sweating helps the body remove impurities, while rituals rejuvenate the spirit. Thus, temazcal represents the womb and participants coming out of the bath are, symbolically, re-born.
