A Solar Eclipse on the 294th Anniversary of the Founding of San Jose del Cabo.

In the middle of the Plaza Mijares, a telescope set up by the scientific tourism company Blue Gate Expeditions gathered people to watch the new eclipse. The last time this phenomenon was seen in our country was in 1991, and the next one is expected to occur in 2052.

Yesterday, 33 years ago, we witnessed the astronomical phenomenon, and its observation was part of the celebrations for the 294th anniversary of the founding of San José del Cabo. Previously, at the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts of Los Cabos, an amateur astronomy biologist gave an informative talk explaining the reason for such a feeling about a natural phenomenon. He also explained why eclipses originate, how many types there are, and how to observe them safely.

After the talk, the attendees of the Institute went to the square, where dozens of families and groups of friends were waiting. As if it were a cloudy day, the light grew dimmer as the minutes passed. And so it was that an astronomical phenomenon turned an ordinary morning into a cause for celebration.

Festivities in San José

San José del Cabo has a rich history that spans centuries. It has witnessed many significant events, including the insurrection of the Californios in 1734. It became an independent municipality on April 8, 1980, leading to substantial infrastructure growth, tourism, and community development. Today, it is a thriving city that continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

A series of special events have been organized to celebrate both anniversaries, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of the community. The first event, an eclipse viewing, took place today. On April 10, 2024, a talk on the history and legacy of San José del Cabo will be given at the Municipal Palace by the city’s chronicler, Gabriel Fonseca, and writer, Luis Domínguez Bareño. This event will be followed by a colloquium with a group of prominent Cabeños, who will share their perspectives and experiences, immersing attendees in the identity and heritage of Los Cabos.

On April 12, 2024, a cultural celebration will be held with a performance by Los Huizapoles, also coinciding with their 40th anniversary, as well as local musical performances and regional dance exhibitions.
