Agriculture as a way of life

Celestino Magdaleno Bañales

Celestino Magdaleno Bañales embodies dedication and agricultural tradition in the San Domingo Valley. From a tender age of just 7 or 8, he eagerly assisted his father in the fields, absorbing invaluable lessons in planting and animal husbandry. Today, as the proud steward of Lot 25—affectionately known as Agrícola 25—he passionately upholds his family’s farming legacy. Specializing in the cultivation of premium alfalfa, he also nurtures smaller plots of wheat, sorghum, and chickpeas. Celestino’s unwavering commitment to his craft not only honours tradition but also ensures the future of sustainable agriculture in the region.

Over the years, Celestino has confronted the challenges of modern agriculture, particularly the lack of financial support. “Unfortunately, the federal government does not provide adequate support for farmers. There is little credit available, and private banks are not supporting agricultural endeavours,” he explains. Despite these hardships, he has managed to sustain production, thanks to the trust established with his suppliers, who provide him with seeds, fertilizers, and insecticides on the condition that he pays them at harvest time. This close relationship with his collaborators and suppliers is one of the fundamental pillars of his work.

For Celestino, agriculture is not just a job; it is a way of life that instils values and discipline. He highlights the importance of self-sufficiency and hard work: “I would advise my son to strive for self sufficiency, similar to the Mennonites. It’s essential to minimize expenses so that when harvest time arrives, there will be enough to support both the family and the workers,” he states.

His love for the land is evident in his commitment and gratitude. Celestino proudly reflects on his family history and his roots in San Isidro, Michoacán. He remembers his father’s dedication to ensuring that he and his siblings could study while working in the fields from dawn to dusk. “It means everything to me. I am grateful to the land because it has provided me with what little I have achieved: my family, my children, and my supportive wife,” he confesses warmly.

Today, Celestino Magdaleno Bañales passionately cultivates the land, inspiring the new generation with a profound respect for the countryside, a strong work ethic, and gratitude for all that the land provides. For him, agriculture transcends a mere livelihood; it is a cherished family legacy he is determined to continue.
